Where would the world be without moms? They give us life and then become our biggest champions. They shower us with unconditional love and provide us with unrelenting support. Especially when it comes to beauty, moms play a special role for many—instilling us with confidence when we need it most, introducing us to the world of skincare and self-care, and serving as our eternal muses. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we’re showcasing some of our favorite inspiring moms throughout the month of May. Covering all things beauty and beyond, we’re inviting these extraordinary women to get real about motherhood, spill their skincare secrets, and walk us through the rituals they swear by.
Today we are profiling Stephanie Liu Hjelmseth, the beauty behind Honey and Silk a destination for style, travel and beauty and mom of Jacob, her 8 month old son. I fell in love with Stephanie's impeccable style. She is the epitome of effortless chic combining Parisian influences with her California style - and shares with us how her routine has changed since becoming a mom.
How would you describe your approach to beauty and wellness?
Our skin is a living, breathing element born from nature, so I think it's sensical to support our skin with natural ingredients in cosmetics and skincare. I always approach beauty from the inside out, by taking care of what goes into my body through my skin or diet. If I have a skin issue like a breakout or dryness, I not only treat it with a topical product, but I also look at my diet and change things up like drinking more water or taking additional vitamins.
How much has your beauty routine changed since becoming a mother?
My beauty routine has become more efficient. I've streamlined my steps and if there's a product that does double duty, it's for me. I used to mask everyday, but now I do it about twice a week after the baby falls asleep for the night. I've also adapted my beauty routine to do it bedside or around my baby's play pen (face wipes are amazing).
What self-care practices do you always make time for?
I always make time to give my skin some TLC with a mask and a facial massage with my roller - I'll try to do it 2-3x a week minimum. I also have to brew a pot of jasmine tea in the mornings right after my beauty routine and before I tackle the rest of my day as a mom.
What is the best beauty advice you’ve received from your mom?
To not put so much on my skin. She prefers a very minimal approach to skincare and makeup with having a tightly edited arsenal of products for everyday. I love having options, but I also like minimal ingredients in my products and I make sure that they're natural and easy for my sensitive skin.
What lessons do you hope to each your son?
I hope that he'll learn from me to always prioritize his mental, emotional, and physical health and well-being first in order to take care of others and live a full life. I truly believe in the quote "you can't pour from an empty cup".
