Love in Bloom: The Significance and Benefits of Jasmine and Roses

Spanning centuries and cultures, flowers have long been a symbol of courtship and love. Their intoxicating scents and velvety petals make them a perfect tactile token of affection, but their power doesn’t end there. With Valentine’s Day approaching, now is the perfect time to take a closer look at two of the blooms that have captured our hearts—jasmine and rose.

These two beautiful botanics have special meaning in Indian culture and tradition, as they do many others around the world. Rose and jasmine also both possess a great deal of benefits for a wide variety of skin types and conditions and are key ingredients in our Kiss of Royal Tea Hydrating Masque and Jasmine Hydrating Tonique.

Explore both the symbolism and power of roses and jasmine below!

Jasmine: The Auspicious Flower

Walking through the streets in India, you’ll see vendors selling bunches of native jasmine on the street and women with jasmine flowers in their hair. This natural hair perfume is much more than just a flower in India—it’s a widely honored symbol of prosperity, love and beauty.

Jasmine is said to have originated in the foothills of the Himalayas, which is considered sacred ground in India. Many Hindu goddesses are often shown wearing garlands of Jasmine, and the flowers are also often used to honor gods and goddesses.

The white petals of Jasmine are symbolic for purity—both of the deity themselves and symbolizing purity and forgiveness for the worshipper. As a symbol of love and purity, it’s not surprising that jasmine plays an important role in Indian weddings, too.

Roses: The Flower of Love

There is an old Indian legend that when gods lived on earth, Brahma, the god of creation, and Vishnu, the god of protection, argued about which flower was more beautiful: the lotus or the rose. Brahma preferred the lotus, while Vishnu argued for the rose. After Vishnu showed Brahma some of the stunning roses in his Himalayan garden, Brahma agreed that they were indeed supreme.

Utilized in Ayurveda for their healing properties, roses have been an important part of Indian culture and daily life for more than 5,000 centuries. As in many other cultures, they symbolize love and purity. Indian royalty were known to bathe in rose water before religious ceremonies.

The Powerful Petals of Rose and Jasmine

Both roses and jasmine possess a great deal of symbolism and meaning to the Indian culture, but that’s only one of the reasons we’re so connected to these fragrant flowers. Roses are anti-inflammatory and aid in tissue regeneration, while jasmine provides antioxidant-rich hydration.

Jasmine is a natural aphrodisiac and is worn by Indian women looking to attract a lover—or charm an existing one. The common ingredient in our two best selling products, steam-distilled Jasmine Tonique and Mighty Majesty hair and body serum, Jasmine also blooms in the evening, which is when love is often most alive.

Rosa damascena, or Damask Rose, possesses many therapeutic properties for the skin. Also high in antioxidants, roses help to reduce inflammation while their antiseptic and antibacterial properties make them ideal for problematic skin. Vitamins A and C work together as a powerful duo to help rejuvenate skin, minimize aging and protect skin from environmental toxins. A key ingredient in our hydrating duo, the natural oil in roses help to hydrate the skin and lock moisture in.

Damask roses bring the hue—and the potent punch of rose petals—to our Kiss of Royal Tea masque. Designed for use with the Jasmine Tonique, this royal ritual is perfect before a romantic evening with your special someone. Not only will you smell like a beautiful Indian garden, your skin will be kissably smooth and hydrated.
