Benefits of Darjeeling tea on skin

Beauty from within: The benefits of Darjeeling tea on your skin

Darjeeling tea has many healing benefits including skin-glowing nutrients and antioxidants.

The history, different types and benefits of this miraculous tea

Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, nestled between the northernmost area of West Bengal and the borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, is the quaint district of Darjeeling. This hill station is from where the eponymous, Darjeeling tea, originates. Otherwise known as the “Champagne of teas”, the story of its origin dates back to almost 150 years ago. Darjeeling then was a sparsely populated hamlet used as a hill resort by the affluent British. During this time, the British were on the lookout for an alternate source of tea supply besides China. In 1845, an avid horticulturist, Dr. Campbell, planted tea seeds in his garden at Beechwood, Darjeeling as an experiment. This experiment was a massive success and by 1847, the government decided to put tea nurseries in the area. By 1852, the first three commercial tea gardens were planted and these estates used the seeds that were raised in government nurseries.

Today, Darjeeling has about 86 tea gardens that produce 10 million kilograms of tea annually. Traditionally, Darjeeling tea is produced from the leaves of the small-leaved Chinese variety of the Camellia Sinensis plant. It then undergoes a complex process of withering and oxidation resulting in a quality, which was and continues to be unparalleled. A combination of natural factors makes Darjeeling the ideal geographic location for tea that is sought after globally. There are four primary types of Darjeeling tea: Oolong, green, black and white. Their natural aroma and widely-acclaimed health benefits all contribute to their appeal both to non-tea drinkers and tea connoisseurs alike.

Health and wellness benefits aside, tea also has multiple advantages when it comes to our skin. Traditionally, Ayurveda has also incorporated the power of tea into its skincare medicine. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties present in Darjeeling tea have been known to keep the skin healthy and glowing. Note that while most of them are rich in nutrients and antioxidants, Darjeeling tea comes in several types, and each one has a different and specific skincare use and benefit. Green and black tea contain caffeine and are super rich in catechins (EGCG-3) and polyphenols, two antioxidants that are known to fight acne and aging, and reverse the effects of UV damage. What’s more? They also help in skin regeneration, stimulate collagen production and rejuvenate the skin from the inside out. Polyphenols are micronutrients that also act as prebiotics that promote a healthy gut, ultimately contributing to clear and glowing skin. A relatively less processed white tea contains more antioxidants than green and helps purify and enrich the skin from within. The caffeine in black and green tea help reduce and eliminate puffy eyes and dark circles. The tannic acid in green tea helps get rid of sunburns and blemishes and the cooling effect can act as a toner. The naturally sweet and strong flavored blend of the Oolong tea promotes a healthy functioning of the immune system. Adding tea to your regimen can give you a guaranteed beauty boost. Darjeeling tea contains antioxidants such as theaflavins and thearubigins. These are large, complex compounds, which are powerful antioxidants that help in eliminating toxins and neutralizing their harmful effects. By flushing out toxins, Darjeeling tea aids in nourishing the skin from within and emanating beauty from the inside out.
