Especially when it comes to beauty, moms play a special role for many—instilling us with confidence when we need it most, introducing us to the world of skincare and self-care, and serving as our eternal muses. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we’re showcasing some of our favorite inspiring moms throughout the month of May. Next up, we caught up with Melanie Chandra, actress, producer, and co-founder of Hospital for Hope. Below, the new mom reveals her fuss-free beauty routine and the one product she swears by to get camera-ready.

How would you describe your approach to beauty and wellness?

I try to keep things as simple as possible. It all starts with your skin—and that's drinking loads of water and eating natural, nutrient-rich food. Sleep would also help, but I would be lying if I said I had a consistent sleep schedule, given mom life, work life, and travel. Sleep is an area in which I'm trying to improve, that's for sure. As for wellness, other than eating foods that fuel you naturally, I enjoy cardio, dance, and yoga, both for a good sweat and the mind-body connection.

How has your beauty routine changed since becoming a mother?

I certainly don't have as much time to fiddle with how I look in the mirror. If my makeup or hair is 50% there, that's good enough for me. This goes without saying, but I wear much less makeup, pretty much zero makeup, when I'm at home. And when I have to go face the public, I've got my makeup routine down to 5 minutes.

What self-care practices do you always make time for?

I cleanse my face, morning and night, and apply eye cream and moisturizers. I also like to do a facial mask once a week, especially if I have to film something the next day. Masks always help to revive my skin and make me feel more fresh and energized.

What is the best beauty advice you've received from your mom?

Beauty starts with a warm heart.

What lessons do you hope to teach your daughter?

I want to teach her to always practice gratitude. Gratitude for what she has been blessed with and for the people in her life who have helped her in even the tiniest way possible. I want to teach her the value of "grit." It's not about being smart, but having perseverance toward a goal in spite of all the obstacles that may come.
